Meet My Clients: Merel Purmer, The Art of Expression
Many of my clients come to me when they feel as though they are ready to take the next step in their business, whatever that looks like for them.
For Merel Purmer of The Art of Expression, the next step meant taking a leap from sole trader to employer and growing her business by employing additional therapists.
The Art of Expression provides counseling and art therapy services for clients aged 6 years and up. Services are tailored to each individual’s needs with a specific focus on supporting people living with a disability.
Merel is passionate about being able to use a flexible and creative approach in therapy and loves that she can assist her clients as they work towards their personal development goals. Taking on a team means that she is able to help even more people.
I recently sat down with Merel and asked her to reflect on our time working together. This is what she had to say.
“I actually found Tammy through a good old Google search! I had been thinking about engaging a business coach for a while and had tried some short sessions with a couple of people but had not made the right connection yet”
I started working with Tammy in June 2020. At that point I was a sole trader, working by myself and renting a single room for the therapy practice. I was very comfortable where I was but was also at that point of needing to decide whether to keep going as I was or take a leap of faith and take the business to the next level.
I hoped that working with Tammy would help me make that decision, and also help me feel more connected and step out of feeling isolated. Looking back, I can see that I really needed someone to bounce ideas with and help me achieve clarity on the next steps to take in my business. I was feeling stuck.
I also wanted to connect with a group of businesspeople. I have done plenty of networking before and that wasn’t what I was looking for. I really wanted to connect with other business people for support and motivation.
Since working with Tammy I have been able to make some big decisions about where I want to take my business. Tammy has helped by looking at my numbers and working through different scenarios with me.
I call myself a calculated risk taker and having a clear picture of what the different options would look like from a financial perspective has been very important.
Since I started working with Tammy I have moved to larger premises and employed my first two therapists.
My goals now are to have my team settled and supported in their roles. I am also aiming to create a routine for myself where I can work four or five days a week instead of six or seven.
Setting up the new premises and employing my first therapists has been scary, exciting and a lot of work but totally worth it!
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my partner and our dogs, catching up with friends, reading and gardening. I am also looking at doing a creative course in ceramics that is not professional development but just for me.
