Taking a break from your business is GOOD for your business.

Taking a break from your business is GOOD for your business.

Most business owners I know feel like they are being pulled in a million different directions during the festive season. Not only are they dealing with the usual day-to-day workload, but they are also trying to plan for a new year AND squeeze in all of the social events and obligations that occur in the lead up to Christmas and the New Year.

It might seem like now is the worst possible time to take a break but trust me when I say this is the BEST time to take a REAL break from your business.

When it came to my own business, I didn’t hesitate to block out an entire month over the December and January period.

I not only NEED to take a break from my business, I WANT to. Although I love my business and it doesn’t feel like work (most of the time), I know that I will benefit in several ways from taking a break. Here are just a few of the benefits I enjoy from taking a true break from my business:

  • I will come back refreshed and energised. After a full year of focus, I am tired. I am extra tired because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the emotional impact it had on me and my clients. The uncertainty, the extra effort required to adapt, and the energy it takes to be resilient in the face of enormous challenges. I need to recharge my batteries and give my body and mind a rest so I can come back ready to face whatever challenges 2021 will bring.
  • I will be more productive when I return. Not only will I have more energy when I return, but taking a break gives me greater clarity. It is easy to get caught up in the ‘noise’ when you are fully immersed in your business. Taking a break and then coming back will make it easier for you to see what is important and turn ‘busy’ into ‘productive’.
I will rediscover my passion. Although I am living my purpose each and every day, like most people I can sometimes lose sight of why I am in business. The day to day admin piles up and I feel like I am spending my time dealing with emails and bookkeeping rather than connecting with my clients. Taking a break allows me to step back, breathe and refocus on my ‘why’.
  • My creative juices will flow more readily. Although I am committed to taking a proper break and not working on my business at all, I do find that when I step away the ideas start to flow naturally. I simply add them to a ‘look at later’ list and let them go until I am ready to step back into business mode.

I truly hope you are planning to take a break from your business. I promise you won’t regret it.
Here’s to another year in business, and to an outstanding 2021.
